McCann’s Brace Keeps 17s Title Hopes Alive

Parkvale 17s 4 Dalkey United 3

Going into this morning’s game our 17s were 4 points behind Mount Merrion with 4 games in hand.

The hosts at Rockbrook Park School began brightly and wasted no time in opening their account and took the lead after only 15 minutes play. A Matthew Whelan corner found Mattie McCann rising like a salmon on the far post to head the ball pass the Dalkey Keeper. The lead was doubled 12 minutes later after the away defence failed to clear their lines and Conor Wheeler sent the ball back in and over the keeper’s head.Conor did confirm after the game that he meant it?2-0 to the 17s at half time and the home side looked comfortably.

Dalkey started the 2nd half strongly and in the 50th minute their centre forward nipped in to knock home from close range. Four minutes later the lead of 2 was restored .Matthew Whelan received the ball from Dave O’Brien in his own half and ran 60 yards beating everything in front of him and squared the ball to Liam McDonagh, who tapped the ball into the net.

At this stage Dalkey looked to be dead and buried, but they are a resilient bunch!! On the hour their left winger went down  in the box under a challenge from a Vale defender. Referee Mark Thompson pointed to the spot and the lead was back to one!!Dalkey refused to lie down and with 13 left, they equalised again.

The draw looked like the most likely result, until Vale were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute. Cool Mattie McCann place the ball into the right hand corner. Our 17s were under the cosh for the last few minutes but they held on and secured all 3 points!!
